Legal requirements
Scooters in the eyes of the law
According to Quebec law and the standards of the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), a scooter (or moped) is defined as “a passenger vehicle having two or three wheels and a maximum speed of 70 km/h, equipped with an electric motor or a motor having a piston displacement of not more than 50 cm3 and with automatic transmission.” It is highly advisable to have motorcycle insurance for this type of motorized vehicle.
The advantages of scooter insurance in Quebec
Although there is no legal obligation to insure a motorcycle of “50 cc” or less, insurance is highly recommended, notably by the Insurance Bureau of Canada, which recommends insurance covering third-party liability as well as possible damage.
Legal documents required for scooter insurance
You'll need your Quebec Class 6D driver's license and, if you're a minor, the SAAQ parental consent form (Consentement du titulaire de l'autorité parentale). You’ll also need the document detailing your scooter’s technical specifications and replacement value.
The insured person's obligations
To avoid any future problems, it is essential to provide accurate information to your auto insurance representative and adhere to the terms and conditions of your insurance contract.
Let's talk about the various scooter insurance options!
Some of the types of coverage available
Scooter insurance can cover civil liability for damage caused to others, as well as property damage and even theft or damage resulting from natural disasters. As applicable, scooter insurance may also cover compensation for injuries sustained in a scooter accident. Talk to your representative or visit the Intact Insurance website.
How to choose scooter insurance
Evaluate your needs and try to plan for several different scenarios. Think about how you'll be using your scooter and plan coverage for each situation, based on your riding habits and where you plan to go.
Other benefits of scooter insurance
In addition to protecting you financially, your insurance company is a valuable partner and can offer assistance. Now that you're insured, you must still ride carefully and attentively.
Safety is particularly important on a scooter
Always obey the rules of the road, wear a helmet and reflective clothing, and be aware of traffic conditions so that you can adjust your riding accordingly. A little-known but very important rule: you're not allowed to take a passenger until you've reached the age of 16. The law also prescribes zero tolerance of alcohol for riders who are under 22 or have less than five years' riding experience.
Reduce the risk of scooter accidents
Avoid risky behaviour such as speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol and keep your scooter in good condition with regular maintenance.
And if accidents do happen, here's how to make a scooter insurance claim:
A few simple step
Contact your insurance representative promptly for assistance and follow the steps of the claims process either online or via the Intact app.
Communicate effectively
A clear and open conversation with your representative is essential. Be precise and transparent in your account of events, don’t lie, and focus on information that corresponds to your coverage.
The open road beckons. You can rack up the kilometres in lively urban settings or along small country roads where you can ride on your scooter much more safely. With the right insurance and careful riding, you'll enjoy peace of mind on your scooter.
